Weight Loss and Fad Diets
Five reasons why people decide to loose weight are: – Fashion, Health, Peer pressure, Attractiveness and Fitness.
The desirable body shape has changed throughout history in our culture dependant upon what is fashionable at the time. At present it is the ‘size 0’ figure which is desirable, rather than, for example, the more curvaceous figure of the Rubinesque shape a few centuries ago. Fashion clothing reflects this, with such items as ‘skinny jeans’. What is not clear is what the main driving force behind these trends is. It may be the clothing companies themselves who ‘feed’ the image of the ideal figure to the media, which in turn crates our desire to transform ourselves. On the other hand it may be that we create this image of the perfect body ourselves out of insecurities and competitiveness amongst our peers. In my opinion it is the fashion industry who dictates to us the most, as well as the opinion of our friends and family to loose weight. For instance, if all those around you are on a diet and discussing calories, we feel compelled to join in, in order to be accepted. In a similar vein, our perception of attractiveness drives us to pursue a certain body shape through the shedding a few pounds. Many of us do not feel happy about revealing our bodies to a sexual partner if there are unwanted lumps and bumps. It is this insecurity about being judged as undesirable, ugly and unattractive that drives us to change our shape through diet.
The most important reasons in my opinion to begin a diet are for our health and fitness.
When we carry extra weight we are putting our overall health at risk. Being overweight or even obese increases the risk of conditions such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and heart disease, to mention a few. If someone where experiencing any of these conditions as either a direct result of their weight or for hereditary reasons, they would certainly be advised by their GP to undertake a weight loss program in order to help relieve the symptoms. Secondly, with regards to fitness, it is incredibly difficult, and certainly impossible in the case of the obese, to perform physical activities to there full potential when carrying around extra pounds. As the individual begins to struggle in their every day physical activities, they may feel compelled to start dieting to help shift the excess.
